The Heartland Cafe building has a rich history before it became what it is today. Built in 1919 by William Glandt, Henry Bull Sr. and Chris Glandt the building originally held a few different businesses. The upper level was a dental office, beauty salon and the Denkers Dance Hall. This dance hall was host to many Saturday night bands playing to the residents of old Elkhorn. On the bottom level there was a pharmacy and soda fountain on the northern side and a hardware store on the south side of the building. An implement dealership and diesel repair shop and garage existed next to the Glandt building (in what is now the outdoor patio and courtyard). This garage hosted trucks which were used to haul canned milk products. In December of 1987, a truck in the garage caught fire which spread to eventually destroy the garage and the upstairs portion of the Glandt building housing the dance hall. After that tragedy the downstairs was occupied briefly by Signex and then was vacant for some time before the Janovskis set up shop and began an extensive renovation of the lower level of the building.

Renovation Project 2007The Heartland Cafe's remodeling project lasted 6 months which involved a complete gutting of the property. The plaster was removed from most of the walls except the upper edging, bricks were then exposed and cleaned with muric acid and given a semi glaze finish. The upper edging and ceiling were then painted black. The asbestos, tile, and carpets were carefully removed from the floor. The cement was buffed and painted a light green color to depict the 1900 era. Three long gated screen windows and a door were knocked into the south wall plus new picture windows to the west and black awnings were added. The facility was completely re-wired with new electricity and new bathrooms and plumbing were also done at this time. Two ceiling fans and schoolhouse lights were installed in the cafe. The eight large pictures which surround the dining area date as far back as 1919 through the date of the fire. The bookcase and wainscoting was also installed to symbolize a more casual era of dining. The original limestone pharmacy floor has been cleaned and buffed with a gloss sealer. The entire Douglas County Gazette coverage of the fire hangs in the pharmacy side of the restaurant. The original steps to the upper dance floor have been cleaned and exposed for our guests to see. Many remember the days they walked up those steps for a Saturday night wedding reception, square dancing, graduations, rollerskating, or sleeping on coats while their parents danced the night away.

To complete the ambiance is the porch to the south with overhead fans and lights. The cement floor from the garage that burned was removed and fresh, rich, black river dirt was dumped into the area and leveled off for the flower garden and grass yard. The exterior wall in the porch was painted a dull red and is covered in chalk with names and messages. The stage was added after the cafe was opened as was the picket fencing around the grass yard. An original wooden fence was left standing. Spray painted artwork is now the focal point of the fence. One can sit on the porch and watch the Union Pacific Rail Road trains pass by, something similar to the steam engines in the good old days. This combination of historical richness and the details added during restoration make the Heartland Cafe the warm, cozy eatery it is today while keeping a bit of the feel and look of yesterday.

The Sunday buffet is the best we've ever had! Omelet man made the best omelets and pancakes were excellent! Highly recommend.

We have been to many buffets in Omaha. We believe Heartland Cafe has the very best! We ventured out in all this snow (got stuck only once!) for a wonderful breakfast.

We have nothing but wonderful memories of our daughter's wedding day. We can't thank you enough for the wonderful service, the delicious food, and the beautiful presentation of it at Lindsey & Rich's wedding reception. You did such a fantastic job with everything from the initial planning stages, to working with our wedding coordinators, to helping make sure everything ran smoothly the day of, all the way to the final clean-up. We were amazed at the seamless way you pulled off the delicious hot buffet for almost 300 people at our location which had no kitchen! The children's buffet was a big hit too! Your staff was cohesive, professional in both manner and dress, cheerful, and eager to help in any way with anything at all at the reception. We really appreciated all of that! What more could we have asked for? Thank you again.

We had a wonderful reception dinner for our daughter and her husband at Heartland Cafe. From the first meeting with Sharon, who is so friendly and accomodation, we could tell this cozy, warm restaurant was just right for us and our 70 guests. The menu was tailored to our exact requests. Our guests commented on the tastey chicken marsala, homemade bread, roasted potatoes, and especially the roasted vegetables. The holiday salad was crisp and the walnuts and dried cranberries were a great treat. Sharon was available for all my questions. She and her staff provided outstanding service the entire evening. She welcomed our band and the whole party with her big smile.
